what to expect
If you want to know some of the nuts and bolts of Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, here are some pointers plus take a look at some faq’s :
Everyone can do Kundalini Yoga. A typical class will start by tuning in with a mantra, a warm up, then a kriya or sequence of posture, mantra and breath done with a specific intended outcome, followed by relaxation and a short focussed meditation. The class ends with a short blessing and tuning out with a mantra.
Some kriya examples include kriyas for disease resistance, for kidneys/adrenals (ie stress), to relax & release fear, for beauty & radiance, to beat depression, for anger & negativity, to open your heart, or let go of grief.
By working on particular areas of the body in particular ways, Kundalini Yoga massages and stimulates the whole body, it’s organs, the endocrine glands that balance the whole chemistry of the body and control things like metabolism and mood, and strengthens the nervous and immune systems so that we can cope better with modern stressors.
Yogi Bhajan’s greatest gift was making open for the first time 1000′s of previously secret and powerful yoga Kriyas and meditations that we can now use for every aspect of life.
Fundamentally, we are made of vibrating energy (quantum physics is catching up to ancient India!) and we work with the subtle energy of the body (eg chakras, meridians, the mind) as well as the more gross or dense energy ie the muscles, organs, glands, nervous system. Even if you don’t know where your chakras, mind or organs are, the kriyas are still doing their magic!
Here’s a short clip from the US that gives you a flavour of Kundalini Yoga…
